Packing for a long haul trip can be stressful, especially when your itinerary is an exciting mixture of adventure and relaxation. We want to help take the stress out of packing so we’ve created a handy guide with the top 10 items to take on a long haul trip:
1. Paperwork
Not the most exciting topic but certainly an essential as you won’t be going anywhere without your paperwork! Make sure you have your passport, travel insurance documents and any visas you might need, and that everything is in date. If you have backups on your phone, take your charger in your hand luggage too. It’s always a good idea to take a photo of your passport, visa and insurance and email them to yourself and your travel partners.
2. Toiletries in Your Hand Luggage
We recommend buying some durable 100ml bottles that you can reuse, decant your favourite products before your flight and arrive looking refreshed. Packing some dry shampoo in your hand luggage stops you arriving with flat plane hair too!
3. Compression Packing Cubes
These handy cubes not only save space but help organise your suitcase or backpack so your stuff doesn’t explode into your room on arrival. Organise your clothes into cold and warm attire, shorts/t-shirts/underwear/trousers or even outfit by outfit.
4. Travel Adapter with USB Ports
There are never enough plugs for the modern traveller, especially at airports. To charge all your items at once we recommend getting an adaptor with multiple USB and USC ports.
5. Tote Bag
Tote bags are great for everyday use with multiple uses; whether it be for shopping, taking to the beach or separating your dirty laundry – they also roll up pretty small to pack into your case.
6. Sun Protection & Mosquito Repellent
Even in colder climates using sun protection everyday is recommended so we suggest stocking up before you leave home to ensure you have some to hand when you land. Mosquito repellent will be essential especially in tropical locations and sometimes harder to find when travelling in less touristy areas.
7. Eye Mask & Ear Plugs
Taking a long haul flight will always mean trying to sleep during daylight hours at some point, whether it is on the actual flight or to get over jet lag. Take a decent eye mask and some earplugs to get some shuteye even in the noisiest of places.
8. Sarong
A multi-purpose item you won’t regret taking – it can be used on the beach as a towel, rolled up it makes a great pillow for long bus or train journeys, a cover-up for religious sites or it can be used as a blanket if the air conditioning on the bus is making you a bit chilly!
9. Warm Layers
People often think of holiday time equals hot weather but some of your itinerary might take you to cooler climes or the temperature might drop after dark. Best to have some warmer clothing on hand which can be layered up.
10. Reusable Water Bottle
Stay hydrated on long flights and reduce your plastic waste at the same time with a reusable water bottle. You’ll be able to fill it up after security at the airport and lots of countries now have refill stations dotted throughout cities to minimise the need for plastic bottles.
