Scarlet Macaw Conservation

Day 1
You’ll begin your journey in San Ignacio, the gateway to Belize’s Chiquibul National Park. On arrival, you’ll meet the FCD team, who will provide an introduction to the park’s rich biodiversity, cultural significance, and the vital conservation measures underway to protect its wildlife.

After an orientation session, enjoy a guided walk through the surrounding forest trails to familiarize yourself with the Scarlet Macaw’s habitat and nesting patterns. Dinner will be at your accommodation, where you can connect with other participants and prepare for the hands-on conservation work ahead.

Day 2
Start your day early with a hearty breakfast before heading to the Chiquibul Forest. Depending on the season, you’ll participate in monitoring the Scarlet Macaws, assisting with activities like inspecting nests, observing bird behaviors, and, when necessary, caring for chicks. Guided by FCD researchers, you’ll learn how these efforts contribute to vital data collection and long-term protection of the species.

Lunch will be a simple picnic in the field, surrounded by the sights and sounds of the forest. In the afternoon, continue your conservation work while exploring the region’s breathtaking landscapes, from towering canopies to pristine rivers. Return to your accommodation in the evening for dinner and relaxation.

Day 3
On your final day, immerse yourself in the interconnectedness of conservation and community. You’ll have the opportunity to support other initiatives tied to the health of the Chiquibul ecosystem, such as sustainable agriculture or waste management projects.

After a shared lunch, you’ll visit key research sites or cultural landmarks within the park, gaining deeper insight into the region’s ecological and cultural heritage. Conclude your journey with a reflection session led by the FCD team, celebrating your contributions to the protection of Belize’s Scarlet Macaws and the Chiquibul Forest. Depart with a sense of accomplishment and lasting memories.

By participating in this experience, you’ll play an essential role in protecting one of Belize’s most iconic species. The Scarlet Macaw population in the region is critically low, and your contributions directly support their survival through monitoring and research.
